Wood Fireplace - Logs burning to fast?
I have a wood burning fireplace. The problem It seems is that when I put logs in the fireplace they seem to burn extreamly fast. I went through a half a box of wood in one night. I go to another persons house and they have one log burning at a nice slow and comfortable rate. Why is this? I should add that the wood I was burning last year was sitting out in the weather for over 1 to 2 years. This is my 2nd year using this fireplace.

- You may have pine or another soft firewood. Try for oak or other hardwood. If you can adjust the damper, close it a little.
- I just researched firewoods since we have a brandnew fireplace and there are lots of good websites about different firewoods. We just ordered a load of ASH. Look at this website http://mb-soft.com/juca/print/firewood.html (Firewood ratings and info)
- Sounds like you are burning soft wood, (pine, poplar, etc) Try Oak Hickory etc.
- The longer you allow your wood to sit outside, the dryer it will get, the better it will burn. It may be the type of wood you are burning. You should always burn hard wood like Maple , Birch,Oak or Cherry. Or it may be the type of fireplace. Slow Burning fire places are the best. These have a tight seal. They use outside air for combustion. The amount of oxygen it takes in will determine the speed that the wood burns. We originally had a regular fire place that would burn two big logs every hour. We ended up exchanging it for a slow burning one. With this one, we burn two small pieces every two and a half hours. And we get much more heat from it as well. http://www.jwiwood.com/faq/best_wood.html http://www.napoleonfireplaces.com/Webshare/wood/wood%20fireplaces/nz6000.html The first site is about wood types. The second is to give you an idea about slow burning fire place inserts.
