Problem below?

ACME Plumbing Supply has just received a shipment of 5,000 stainless steel valves for chemical plants, where regular steel valves would corrode. However, it is known that in the shipment, 250 of the values are regular steel which were inadvertently included. Unfortunately there was no way to distinguish between the two types of valves. At the same time, ACME receives an emergency order for 5 of the stainless steel valves from one of its largest customers. If ACME fills the order, what is the probability that one or more will be a regular steel valve? a)What distribution will be used? b)What are the parameters of this distribution and their values? c)Represent the question as a probability statement. d)Calculate the probability.

  1. stainless steel is non magnetic, mild steel is, therefore, check the valves as they are distributed and the probability is zero that a mild steel valve will get shipped .
  2. The situation is binomial with n = 5 and p = 1/20. P(x > 0) is best calculated by P( x > 0) = 1 - P(x = 0).
