Can Vinyl plumbing fittings be used for ethanol storage and transfer?

Public Comments

  1. Because ethanol is flammable, I would never use a plastic material in a storage or transfer system. If there is a leak and a fire, you want the system to be able to retain its integrity as much as possible. Because of this any low melting point metal such as copper or brass is also not a good idea. This is a general philosophy in the oil and gas industry.
  2. the vinyl fitting would become soft, you would have to use brass to be safe
  3. no recommended, hydrocarbons should not be stored or transported in hydrocarbon based equipment. Ethanol is a funny one, and I can't say for sure if it would react with the vinyl, but for any industrial situation this would never be acceptable. Use brass or copper as already suggested, otherwise stainless steel.
