Plumbing Question! Continuous backup in basement?
We are having a small problem with our plumbing. The unused bathroom in our basement would overflow all the time (we are on a septic system) even when our pump was on. We capped off the Toilet and sink now. Now when we shower/flush/laundry, it comes out of the tub and the drain line for the washing machine. We have snaked all lines but the stack and the tub. What can we do (this is a long weekend, and it would cost alot of $$$$ to call a plumber out 45 min out of the main city) We have lived in this house three years, the septic tank was just cleaned out in November so we haven't ignored it and this problem JUST started this past week. We have capped off the toilet already as we were getting MORE water when the toilet was there. Its not so much now, but just leaking out of other places. We are aboot to go clean the stack (oh and we have thawed out the ice in the vent on the roof as the weather has been almost -45 for three weeks) in the basement.

- You need to have youre septic pumped out.It doesnt cost a lot and should be done once every year or two anyway
- Check your trap going into the septic tank it could be clogged. Also your finger system could be clogged. Depending on where your at in the country, your septic tank could be full of water and needs to be drained. I hope I have helped, I do not think you have a quick fix problem.
- Sounds like your septic tank has been neglected for to long. They have to be maintained. You can't just ignore them.
- You can lift the lowest toilet off the floor and snake that line going into the septic. obviously there is a blockage there. Remember to go and buy a wax seal to use when replacing the toilet. If that did not work you may also remove an upstairs toilet and snake down.
- -45 for three weeks, Yikes! The basement toilet is the last fixture to the tank, the problem doesn't show as much when you cap it because the other fixtures are further, you state that you snaked the lines, but there must be a problem in the main, or the tank, is it freezing up, below frostline, any trees near the line; you need a serious snake run through the main to the tank. Hope your heater works!
