- Poly Vinyl Chloride....the material it is made of.....before pvc plumbers had to use metal pipe and it was much more expensive to install and required much more training for the plumbers because the metal pipe required a lot of soldering to be put together as opposed to the modern PVC pipes which any monkey can glue together. The Plumbing unions fought the acceptance of PVC for many years because it adversly affected the rates they were able to charge and it also made it easy for homeowners to "Do it themself" instead of having to pay a plumber for any pipe repairs. If not for the fight from the plumbers union to delay the acceptance of PVC by building codes, it would have come into normal use in the sixties instead of the 70's.
