How fix gas fireplace?

I have a house built in 1958 that had gas added to the fireplace. What should I be aware of regarding getting it working? I asked my handyman to look at it and I wonder what type of professional could fix it? My chimney sweep said to get a plumber to take out the gas line but I would rather get it to work. Who do you suggest I hire to fix it and what should I look out for? I want to fix it lowest cost but safely.

  1. call a gas fitter, it's very dangerous to mess around with gas appliances if you do not know what you are doing.
  2. A furnaceman would know how to work on your gas fireplace.
  3. open fireplace, wood or gas, loses more heat than gives the room. its pretty but too drafty. modern enclosed gas fireplace insert is worth saving if efficient.
  4. WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY ADDED TO THE FIREPLACE IT SHOULD HAVE A SHUT OFF VALUE NEAR THE FIREPLACE BOX. TO REPLACE WHAT U NEED FIXING SOUND LIKE THE RACK INSIDE THE FIREPLACE THAT U CAN SEE. SOME OF THEM ARE JUST A 1/2" BLACK PIPE WITH HOLES IN IT. ANY PLUMBER, GAS COMPANY OR FIREPLACE STORE SHOULD HAVE YOUR REPLACEMENT PART AND OR FIX VERY RESONABLE
