Cleaning a gas fireplace?

I took apart my gas fireplace to clean the area, but now when I turn it on I can hear the gas coming out - much louder than before. The sound is like the rush or air going through the pipe and holes that allow the fire to esacpe. It's making too much noise now so something must be wrong. Any ideas?
