Can I remove my gas logs and make my fireplace wood burning?

I never use my gas fireplace because of the cost of natural gas however I would like to take my gas logs out, shut off the gas and make it wood burning. Is that possible/safe? It is an all brick fireplace and chimney. It has a fairly large flue so I think it could accomodate the smoke. Has anyone done this with a fireplace that was built as gas?

  1. no, just replace the thing! I grandfather replaced his but he's can repair and build about anything when it comes to housing
  2. Yes, you can. But your best bet would be to leave the gas part connected and use that as a starter only. A few years ago our gas logs cracked, so we took them out, and used wood logs for awhile until we could replace them.
  3. I would not recommend performing this yourself. If you are truly interested in removing your gas fireplace I would contact a company who works with them (installing, selling, servicing). They will be able to ensure the gas line is removed far enough away from the heat source that you don't have to be concerned about an explosion. I would also contact your local fire marshal for an inspection to be sure your chimney and fireplace will be able to withstand the heat and smoke from a wood burning fire. Finally, I would contact a local chimney sweep to clean the chimney before you burn an actual fire. Taking proper precautions will help to ensure that you still have a home after lighting the real fire. Good Luck!
  4. I would definately consult with a professional on this. You could burn your house down!
