Gas Starter or Gas Fireplace?

I have never used a fireplace before and just moved to an apartment that has one, but I do not know if it is gas or just a gas starter. There is a short pipe that sticks into the fireplace (about four inches), but it doesn't have any holes in it and there is a round object on the wall next to the fireplace that has an opening for a key. If it is just a starter, am I able to start a fire with just a butane lighter or do I have to use the starter as well?

1. Don't start it with a lighter or you will blow yourself up, you need buy the burner and have a professional hook it up or else you will run into problems.
