- the ? said should but wouldn't could be better fit. any ways that doesn't matter but yess it perfectly fine to have a plasma or flat scrn tele. at the same level b/c for the pass 10 yrs Ive had my flat screen in right next to my fire place insert and it has not showed and sign of going out or getting to over heated and most that has to do with the fact the TV has a well built exhaust fan that keeps it cold.
- Plasma TV's normally run hot, I would suggest that if you have a better choice of placement use it. Ive had to repair more then a few plasmas that where placed to close to a fireplace. The newer models do have a better cooling system but its still better to be safe then sorry with such an expensive purchase.
- Check the temperature. If it is within specs then it is ok. Better also make sure that the image is about your eye level when you are seated.
- You would need to check the temperature of the chimney breast. I would recommend getting a survey done on it by an electrical retailer they will tell you if it is suitable or not. Plasmas do get hot and you do not want to give them anymore heat.
