Is it ok to hang a flat screen TV over my fireplace?

I am looking into buying either a Plasma or LCD flat screen TV (still can't decide between the 2 yet) and I would love to hang it above my fireplace. Is this ok to do?

  1. without more info I'd say no since the heat would mess it up, but it really depends on things like thickness of wall over flue, mantle size, etc. Best bet is to ask store you intend to buy from
  2. would be if you not using it but the heat from it just might be a little much but some fire places do not get hot above so what about yours how hot does it get there and you could hang it for the summer and move it when you start using fire place
  3. as long as your fireplace is NOT on while your tv is above it because heat rises, and it will kill your plasma
  4. ive seen it done at my friends house. the tv didnt look damaged at all. not sure how often they used the fireplace though. it should be fine because if its not RIGHT on top of the fire there wont be too extreme heat that the tv cant handle.
  5. Here's what an expert says... it might surprise you. Maybe. Ask the Expert: Flat-Screen TV Over a Fireplace? http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/advice/1942/ask-the-expert-flat-screen-tv-over-a-fireplace.html
  6. Turn on your fireplace...get a thermometer and set it where you want the TV to go....let it run for about three hours and see what the temperature is. If it's above 100 degrees....talk to a Home Theater Specialist or your Fireplace installer about a heat shield....
