should a fireplace screen with glass doors have any space on the sides of it(between the fp opening and side)?

- Because burning wood can explode due to hot gas or steem and send glowing embers flying and bouncing in every direction, there should be no space for the ember to fly out onto a floor or carpet. This of course should not matter if you have an artificial gas log. The glass doors also allow radient heat (like warmth of sunshine) to enter the room while directing colder air at the bottom into the fireplace for combustion and to carry products of combustion up the chimney. Any space at either side may defeat the purpose depending on how much air the space can pass.
- No. Get some doors that fit or supplement what you have with a spark screen.
