The fireplace in our rented home seems to look open, but when lit, we get faint smoke throughout the house.?

When looking up the vent it seems open. Any idea why we are getting this smokey smoke throughout the house? What else can we try to do???? (It is not a fireplace insert.) We get smoke that we can see and smell in every room in the house.

  1. Clean the flu,it is probably restricted
  2. not sure what type of fireplace you are talking about? better off just to call your landlord to be safe, or call the fire dept and see if someone can come out and look at it for you.
  3. You may be experiencing the affects of an oversized flue pipe. In oversized conditions the air at the bottom of the flue has trouble warming up to a point that it will allow the chimney to exhaust properly. Try stuffing a newspaper in the bottom of the flue opening and lighting it and then lighting the fire ie. starter logs kindling or whatever you are using. If this works as I suspect it will you will realize the difference right away and will have to do this everytime you light up.
