Can you buy a gas fireplace insert that can also burn wood?

I am wanting to add a fireplace to my house. I don't even have an idea as to the cost or what kind to get.

  1. Gas logs are usually made of a ceramic material and require a gas hook up with a cut off valve close by. Building a wood fire is sure going to make a mess and possibly plug the holes in the gas log pipeing. If you are serious please hire a contractor. Gas pipes start at the meter and run to the last gas appliance in one long pipe joined together. You can't just unscrew a common pipe joint and put in a T in the middle so what a lot of people do is go to the furnace where the pipe joints can be dissembled and work from there using 1/2 inch rolled copper to run gas to the fireplace. I have done this for a living and from first hand knowledge I will tell you most homeowners usually make a mess and have to call for help.
  2. A fireplace is either gas or wood. They are not both. The same wood fireplace can be converted to gas with a gas log set, but then you can't burn wood. Does your house have a fireplace? If no, installing one is a very involved job. It should not be DIY unless you know all about fireplaces.
