Have you ever removed a fireplace insert stove, but kept the fireplace?

We have what I consider to be a very ugly fireplace insert that is black, with a solid door, no window to actually enjoy the fire.It extends out from the fireplace 11 inches on an raised hearth that extends out 22 inches from the wall. I have been wanting to remove it since we bought the house 7 years ago. We have never used it. The fireplace surround and hearth are brick.

  1. It can be removed. Have a chimney sweep check the flue to make sure it's OK. And also check that the original fireplace damper is there and working
  2. they are very easy to remove, they just slide out. But, be aware, they are very heavy. make sure you have help. I removed mine sevearal years ago, ( insurance company said i had to) and just replaced it with a nice fireplace door.
