Fireplace logs for cleaning chimney?
I just bought a house with a fireplace. I heard that you can buy special logs to burn that will clean your chimney out. Anyone ever try them? Or is it just better to have someone come clean it for you? Or is it something you can DIY? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

- i have used the chimmey fire logs to clean the fire place i do beleive they work good expensive though you can get out walmart or canadian tire good prices there .But if it is a new home have someone could out the first time to clean just in case you have bird nests or squirrels living in there
- First, most dirty chimneys are caused because people have nice pretty fires for appearance and not heating. The "cool" appearance fire is what causes the build-up in the first place. I suggest a good hot fire once a month. The fire burning logs create a chemical reaction to "dry" the creosote buildup in the chimney. It will flake off and hopefully "burn" away in the chimney flue. I have always cleaned my chimney by having a very "hot" fire with the damper open fully so that they updraft cleans the flue and "sweeps" the residue out.
- Use a chimney sweep, they will clean and inspect chimney. Better result.....
- yeah wal mart...the chimney sweeping log...i dont use it...i shove the wire brush down myself..but im a firefighter i love being on roofs
- chimney logs are just for cheap maintenace. you should always use a professional sweeper first. they'll check to see if your chimney is in good condictions, check that there is no obstructions ( bird nest) and throughly clean it
- They do OK but they're no substitute for a good brushing. I have a brush and do my own every year or two. If you can get to your chimney top easily it's not hard to do. Don't neglect it though and wait too long, I caught a chimney on fire in my first house. I didn't check it and obviously the previous owner hadn't cleaned it in a long time. Pretty spooky there for a few minutes, stood up on the roof with the hose for a while to make sure no burning embers got on my roof and caught it on fire.
