Cost of installing an attic fan or whole house fan?

Hello All, We're looking to install a whole house fan / attic fan. The house is 1000 sq.ft and is two stories. How much should we expect to pay for the installation services? I live in San Jose, California. I want to make sure I'm not ripped off - not the DIY type and have to hire an electrician or contractor to do this for me. Also, how much should I expect to pay for a good attic fan itself that is controlled by a humidistat / two drive / belt driven and installed inside the attic (not on the roof)? Thank you for your answers. Sally

  1. We recently had a humidistat / thermostat controlled attic fan installed in a gable in our attic. While he was running wires, he also installed a light fixture and switch in the attic. The whole job was completed by an electrician and it cost $250. This was in Pennsylvania.
  2. A whole house fan sits down on the joists of the attic . With the cost of the fans varies I would look around for an good deal especially in the winter. Most of the fans are 24inches square and u may be able to fit between the joists if on 24 in centers with box frame going up past the insulation in the attic . All depending where the elect panel is,I would run 20a/120v circuit , manufactures domake some are 240v but it will cost more to install ( 2pole breaker, switch). Just stay with 120v type, The install should be in hall way centrally located , in your case close to the stairs to draw air from below also on 1st floor. Your probably looking at costs about 750-900$ When all everything all said and done good luck
