I want to change a Ford Transit 190 LWB (Ereg) low roof into a hi top. Can anyone tell me how/ who can do it?

I have an old but very sound transit converted to a camper van but it doesn't have a high top roof. I am able to get the hi top but am struggling to find someone who knows how to fit it. Is it possible DIY or is there someone out there experienced in doing these conversions on old vans?

  1. As i would involve altering the body then u need to make sure the strength of the body is not affected. Unless u know what ur doing then would surgest u consult a bodyshop.
  2. first you need hightop then you need to cut the top of the roof [right to the edge] make sure you dont cut any main frame away then you need brackets or better long bracket rail all the way around. also put very strong solvent on the back of the bracket or better welding it. then bolt the high top to the frame use very strong solvent to connect hightop to the frame[ bracket rail] make sure it has rubber seal/bush between the bracket and high top when connected this is if it is fiber glass high top if its steel hightop just weld the hole lot to the steel bracket frame. also it is better if you put a bracket frame on hightop to . important to measure your van and from the van you are taking the hightop off
  3. I assume you will have a fibre glass top? if so they very easy to fit, i did one a few years back for a friend,it took me 4hours start to finish, you need to trim the roof off leaving around 40 mm's of the old roof in place just above the guttering, i used an air saw which was quite quick, then as quick as you can and thiis is best if two of you are doing this after you have cleaned the remaining bit of roof with a degreaser, apply a windscreen adhesive bead all the way round the roof, then sit the new top on, which will take at least 4 people to lift it in place.be as quick as poss in fitting the top, once in place you can fit extra brackets on the inside,or as i did and fitted peel rivets on the outside and covered them with a body trim... if you apply the the adhesive correctly you wont need any other fastenings, believe me its srong stuff! hope this helps..
