How do I repair a pierced mains-gas pipe?
I've discovered that there's been a slow gas leak under the floorboards in my bedroom ever since I moved in 3 years ago! Turns out the central heating installer screwed the floorboard panel back down straight through the gas supply pipe. I have turned off the gas supply, slowly removed the wood screw and am wondering if it is safe for me to seal the hole with a blow-torch & solder. I have never done any DIY plumbing before. I am worried that I will get the second shock of my life if the residual gas in the 16metre pipe back-burns. Will the pipe explode/a torch of flame shoot out of the 2mm hole? I'd already made enquiries of the previous owners about who installed the boiler & gas supply. It was the guys's brother who is Corgi-registered but lives180 miles away.

- Call a corgi registered gas engineer.
- omg NOOO call a plumber to replace the pipe...
- In most places, that has to be done by a licened gas contractor. DON,T try it yourself.
- No you are not allowed by law to interfere with the gas mains you need a corgi registered gas engineer to fix the leak,
- You can't do that yourself ...... you need a gas engineer!
- call a registered gas engineer
- dont take any chances - phone the gas board
- No, don't solder it, assuming this is copper pipe, cut out the damaged piece with copper cutters, get a flaring tool, and at the hardware store you should be able to find a fitting. Your heating contractor should fix this for free, since he did it, save that screw for evidence.
- call the gas board to come and repair it
- You are lucky that you didn't have a huge explosion! Don't attempt to solder it. It will need to be sawn through on the hole line and a coupling sweated on to the cut ends, then tested for leaks. Contact a Corgi reg. plumber/ heating engineer for this work.
- Gas lines are never soldered because if you had a fire the solder would melt and then you would have a bigger fire. You will need to cut out the damage and replace with new section with the proper fittings. Heck just make the installer that did the damage fix it!
- Tallbrian should lie down !!!!!! joints on gas pipes are always soldered compression fittings are only used where they are visible as they do quite often leak. Unfortunately you will have to get a CORGI reg gas fitter to repair it. As others have said get the installer to come back. If he is a bit slow at responding just mention contacting CORGI regarding the leak I'm sure he'll be round pretty quick . CORGI engineer
- BOOM! For christs sake man Get a corgi reg plumber in! It's the legal requirment, You dont wanna go killing your family do you?
