DIY polypropylene plumbing?
fittings and how to do them

- Go to Travis Perkins or situated in most towns in the UK, PlumbCenter (this the correct spelling) to buy them and they will tell you first hand exactly how to connect and handle them. You will, if you ask, also get at least a 10% discount on your purchase. Sounds like an Easter project for you. Best of luck.
- Just cut to length & push the joints together, easy.
- It depends on which manufacturer's product you use. My local Travis Perkins is pretty clueless, but there are 101 other suppliers. Ask the supplier for instructions on the particular brand of fitting you choose, they vary slightly. Key point - When you cut the pipe, use a pipe cutting shear, not a hacksaw. If you use a saw, you will damage the seals inside the fittings.
- When using plastic pipes, ensure any cuts are clean, (use a file) better still, you a can buy special pipe cutters for about £9.00. There are 2 main types of pipe (grey and white) on both of these pipes, inserts are needed, they push inside the pipe to make a good seal, the white pipe fittings are then pushed onto the pipe as far as it can go, now pull it apart, (it will come out slightly) now push the fitting home. The grey pipe, put the inserts into the pipe, push the fitting on, as far as it will go, now tighten the plastic nut (by hand) as tight as it will go. The same fitting will take you from copper to plastic. Do not use push fittings on chrome pipe, they will just pop out. When finished turn water on slowly, to make sure there is no leaks If I were you I would order the fittings from Scewfix Direct they are a lot cheaper than Travis Perkins. Have a good Easter. and not a wet one I hope..
- hire a plumber and watch them.
- The fittings are barbed that is they're made to slide into the poly-pipe. You have a choice of metal (aluminum or brass) or plastic, either works what flavor you want is up to you, I prefer brass. You will find a heat gun (barring a heat gun an expendable hair dryer) a very nice option to trying to slip the fitting into the poly-pipe. With the heat gun, heat the poly slide in the fitting and whoopee!!!! You will want to double clamp the fittings, make sure you use stainless steel clamps. Also make sure the main driver is opposite of each other. The reason you want to double clamp the fittings is, with one clamp there's a chance for the water find it's way out of the poly if there's a flat spot, a double clamp with the two mechanicals opposite of each other prevents that. Tighten well, if you have the brass fittings you'll ruin the clamps before you ruin the fittings, if you have the plastic, be very careful, but then the fittings are cheap. Hope this helps. DK
- Well, they do make fittings for poly pipe that a DIY'er can use, but I personally don't like them. If you had a plumber installing the pipe, he would probably use a crimped fitting that is more reliable.
