any suggestions on painting kitchen cabinets or cupboards?

1. before you do anything make sure the cabinets are completely clean. there is a mixture of tide and tri sodium phosphate that cleans everything. check with your druggist as to the tri sodium stuff and he/she can advise on the amount of both tide and tsp. once clean go for it. i am assuming that you have removed the doors and such. a light sanding or heavy depending on the condition. keep in mind that time is money; also price new cupboards.
2. If they are already painted, you will have to strip them. Then find a one coat paint. Kilz makes an awesome one that you can get in custom colors. Take your cabinet doors off to paint them. Paint it all with your one coat paint. Then apply a high gloss protective finish after the paint is dry. About 24 hours later. This will help with fingerprints and such. Without the gloss, dirt can actually be absorbed into the paint and will never come off. Let the gloss dry for 24 hours, then put it all back together. You will have beutiful cabinets that will last a lifetime. Or for as long as you like them!!!
3. After prepping the cupboards like karen k suggested, be sure to use the right primer. If you are using a latex paint, make sure your primer is for latex paint. if you use oil based primer for latex paint or vice versa the paint will bubble up and you'll need to scrape it off and start over. Also, have you chosen fabric for window curtains, chair cushions, table cloth? You should always choose a paint color either from or that compliments your fabric palette. If you are choosing white for your cupboards, don't go with stark white. Choose an off white or creamy white. It'll look more inviting.
