A few questions about painting my kitchen?
I am on my way to go buy the supplies to paint my kitchen. The walls currently have Kilz oil based primer on them (over several layers of unidentified white paint). The walls are textured and don't need any repairs. My questions are: 1) What kind of paint is best on textured walls? I was thinking about using matte. Is this ok? Oil or latex? Fumes aren't an issue. 2) What color should I use? My cabinets are white, my counters are a pale greyish blue, and my floors are a dark reddish brown wood laminate. All the trim, accessories, and curtains are white. I can't decide between light yellow and a blue that is a few shades darker than my counters (kind of a stormy ocean blue-grey). I like the blue a lot but I'm afraid it may make it look gloomy (and also require more coats than the yellow). 3) What supplies do I need to buy? How much paint will it take to cover a room that is approx 13x18 with 8ft ceilings? Sorry for the long question. Thanks in advance for your help

- 100% acrylic latex paint is what I recommend - it is easy to apply, easy to clean, environmentally friendly, durable, and although not an issue for you, very low-odour. The glossier the finish, the easier it is to clean; for kitchen walls a satin, pearl, or eggshell finish is fine -- not all companies make satin and pearl, but they are in between eggshell and semi-gloss. From what you have described, I would opt for the pale blue-gray for your walls. You don't really have to go much darker than your countertop colour unless that is really too pale. With the white cabinetry, the blue should not feel confining. Actually, yellows tend to require more coats for good coverage than blues. You don't mention your backsplash and I am wondering what material and colour that is, because you should have at least a gentle contrast between your back-splash and wall colour. It's impossible to estimate how much paint you will require without knowing the amount of cabinets your kitchen has. A good quality paint will cover approximately 350 square feet of wall. Not factoring in any cabinetry, you have 496 square feet of wall, and presumably you will want to do two coats of paint, so that makes 992 square feet. Presuming you have 13 linear feet of cabinetry, that leaves about 850 square feet (2 coats of paint). You likely also have at least one door and window in your kitchen, so I would say you should be okay with 2 gallons. If you're also doing your ceiling, you will need about 1.5 gallons of ceiling paint. Because you'll be painting around cabinetry, you should also purchase painter's tape, rollers & sleeves, a paint tray with a liner or two, some drop cloths to protect your floor and counters, a good 2.5" angled paint brush... I think that basically covers everything. Good luck.
- it would be very wise to use at least a semi-gloss in your kitchen. it makes cleaning up the splattered pasta sauce so much easier. when you go and get paint samples take at least four of one color and tape them together and tape them on your wall. move them around for a couple days and get a feel for the color different times of day and near the floor, up high, next to your fridge by the window etc. bottom line...take your time choosing your color . you don't want to pick the wrong one and regret it. last, get an opinion from someone else when you have narrowed it down to 2 or 3 colors. good luck and happy painting.
- holy nikkies batman..... both colors will look nice you have a lot of light colors in your room already so go for the blue you want as for the sheen I'd go with atleast a seem gloss its easyer to wash and in a kitchen you need to wash in . take the size of you room with you to the paint store and they will tell you how much paint you need IF YOU BUY GOOD PAINT OYU WILL ONLY NEED TO DO ONE COAT OF EITHER COLOR.GL
