What is your opinion of painting kitchen cabinets?

In terms of the actual work of painting them as well as maintaining them, do you think it's a good idea?

  1. Great idea. My wife and I painted our old wood cabinets. We used black, high gloss enamel. It totally changed the look of the kitchen. Remove the doors, (label the backs to get them back on right and remove all the hardware. Use high gloss to make it easier to keep clean.
  2. Use a latex based paint you should do fine.
  3. I painted mine because I moved into a house with old cabinets and painting them was a cheaper fix than replacing them. It was a lot of work and hassle. I didn't take the doors off or sand them first, so the new paint didn't stick very well to the old paint. I had to keep doing areas over and over again for a few days and it was a mess. I finally got it done and fortunately there have been no chips or peeling in the paint. Now I'm glad I did it because the colors I used are cute and it really perked up the kitchen, but I realize this is also just a temporary fix until my husband and I are ready to renovate the kitchen completely in a few years.
  4. I moved into a house with Christmas green cabinets and cow head knobs.I went to work on them.I painted with Kilz and then went with a good one coat kitchen paint. It was easy and the one I bought can be washed off.Its been 3 years and they look nice, but I'm in the mood to change.Good luck with your project.
  5. depends, cost wise it is quite a bit less to paint than to get new, but remember you will need at least 3 coats of paint probably more if you don't want to worry about always banging them and that doesn't count the primer and the sanding work you would have to do , and if you don't have the time then it might be best to just replace them. if you decide to paint remember to prep and primer and to let the paint fully dry in between coats otherwise you won't like your results I Hope this helps
