We put in bamboo flooring. It already has a finish, but is it a good idea to polyurthane to protect it more?

  1. Prefinished engineered floors are generally not designed to be refinished. Adding another finish is only asking for trouble unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
  2. NO!! You will actually void the manufacturers warranty if you do something to the floor. The only time you would want the refinish is after the warranty expires and the floors are looking shabby. You should also contact the manufacturer to find out about the warranty and also what products are best to clean it with.
  3. it is not a good idea to add a finish to a pre finished floor rright away.after a few years you can buff and recoat them. the factories where the floor was pre finished probably used a commercial product and if you add a retail finish to it now you may alter the original clear coat. Also some manufactures will state in the paperwork that comes with the floor , that if you add anything ,other than the factory finish...it will void the warranty. One oyher thing , if what you have is true bamboo, watch it closley as bamboo is originally a round wood, authentic bamboo floors have been prone to cupping, as the wood wants to resume its natural shape. good luck...contractor in MF.
