How much to build my own Kitchen cabinets?
We just bought a home and i hate the kitchen cabinets. My husband and his bestfriend can build about anything so i'm wanting to see what the price would be to build them ourselves. We are spending a lot in other areas of the house like adding on additons so i dont want to spend a huge amount in the kitchen. Originally we were going to just paint the existing ones, but its an older home and i just want a fresh look. Its not a very big kitchen at all. Please help! Thanks =) Please list prices if you know them

- How about getting the unfinnished cabinets at Lowes or Home Depot? They can even order you some nice pine cabinets in a afordable pricing ! That is what I did and it turned out great ! Friends of mine hung the cabinets and I am estatic about them! Go and have a good look ! Good Luck to you
- You might consider having a local shop make new doors for your old ones. The cost savings is incredible over new and if your kitchen configuration works you could save a couple grand just having some new doors made. Good luck on your project.
- You can build your own cabinets for about $15-40 each depending on the kind of wood you use. Obviously the really nice hardwood is going to cost more, but if you are just going to paint them then don't go high end. Another option is what the first answerer gave you and it's a great idea! Get an appointment at Home Depot with one of their kitchen designers and they will basically design the cabinet layout with you for free. Then you can either purchase the cabinets from them or use the plans to build your own. Just be open with them from the start and they are more than willing to work with you in my experience. Cabinets can definitely make an "old" kitchen look brand new! PS: I have had over 20 customers go through Home Depot's kitchen design department to have cabinets designed/ordered and every one, without exception, has been very happy. Despite other answers here they do have professionals who are very good at cabinet design. I don't know about Lowe's - I don't use them.
- consider getting new face frames, doors and drawer fronts. its much easier and cheaper than whole new cabinets.
- Well.... Cost will vary wildly depending on materials & hardware. Then too there is the build time & finishing to consider. I refaced cabinets ,built new doors & added a couple of new cabinets a little at a time. Could'nt afford new cabinets either but, would have gone w/ professional refacing as an option. It' a big job starting from scratch when you consider all the shelving , brackets etc etc.etc If the guys can prebuild & finish the cabinets & you do not go nuts on expensive details there could be a saving & you can have it built the way you want it. Best regards
- I would never go to Lowes or Home depot, despite what the comercials say I have yet to see any profesinals that work there. I don't care what other people say about the exeriance they have had there, I built a custom house with everything bought at lowes down to the trim, these people do not know how to figure anyhting especially cabinets. What I am trying to say is stay the H E L L away from Lowes or Home Depot. Building Cabinets is very time consuming especially if you don't have the right tools. One guy recomended just a face lift great idea you could have a profesinal do that or DIY, but once again very time consuming but you would save a lot of cash. My advice is to go to a custom cabinet shop and have them give you a bid (they will do that for free) and then go to a real Lumber yard and have them give you a bid on pre made cabinets. Then compare your bids to what it would cost to build them your self you might be suprised. I hope this helps Good luck.
- i worked selling and designing kitchens for lowes. the cabinets that they keep in stock in the store arent worth making a kitchen with. their special order kraftmaid cabinets run about 95 dollars a lf . not a bad price. i work now for another cabinet company. ordering just doors isnt cheap. you might get lucky on the net with that......one answer i saw on here says his prices were good. another answer on here says it takes awhile to buiold cabinets and you neeed the right tools........it does and you do. another answer on here says there are no professionals at lowes and h/d hes wrong........before working at lowes ....I instales for them for a year in florida and i have installed, built remodeled, and did real estate appraisal......nah i had no idea what i was doing...........yea right. if you email me at the hoo ill see if i can help you more
