How do I paint a bedroom with a "chair" rail?
I want to paint my daughter's bedroom a light pink. It has a "chair" rail, though I'm not sure that's what it's called when it's about 2/3 up from the floor, going all around the room. This rail and all the trim are painted white. Do I put the darker color below the rail and a pattern above or vice versa? Thanks!

- U can do it either way. I would put a pattern below the chair rail though.
- Darker color below.
- I would put the pattern below the rail. That's what I did in my guest bedroom - a pottery patterned wallpaper below and a dark rust above. I couldn't be happier with the results.
- The chair rail was most likely an attempt to give a wainscotting type appearance to the room much like the older style home had with paneling below the chair rail. I have seen people do this both ways as a paint store owner, and have seen it come out in very interesting ways. Doing the lower wall white like the moulding would continue the wainscotting theme with the color above. There really are no "rules". It's your house, decorate it how you like it as you are the one that lives with it! Good luck!
- Whatever is darker, the pattern or the solid paint color, should go on the bottom. If the darker of the two is on top, it makes it appear top heavy.
