Is sleeping in a light bedroom bad for your health?

We have very thin and light curtains in our bedroom at the moment which let in a load of light in the mornings. The place is literally completely lit up by about 4:30am. Could this be bad for our health?

  1. It would be terrible for my emotional well-being, and would then affect physical health because of sleep deprivation. I'd answer this question yes ... cover your windows.
  2. i dont see why it should affect your health though it may stop you getting a full nights sleep
  3. No, but it might mean that you sleep less than what you were used to. Apparently the sleep hormone serotonin gets activated when your surroundings are dark. You feel tired, fall asleep more easily and sleep longer. The light might wake you up - but that's all.
  4. Mine is the same, I'm as fit as a fiddle
  5. It can as the light takes effect on your brain and the sleep gets interrupted. Best to sleep is when it is dark.
  6. I, personally, don't think it is a "health" concern that is problematic. Someone else said it might damage emotional/mental being which in turn effects physical being. But the only thing I might see as a problem is just not being used to sleeping with the light on, sort of say. If you grew up from childhood sleeping in the dark and now there is a light on that would definitely disturb your rest, which could present a problem for you after much lost sleep. If you truely are worried about a health problem coming about, I would certainly invest in thicker or heavier curtains or blinds to prevent light leakage while you sleep.
  7. Sleeping in a lit bedroom is not good because our body reacts to it and does not get a full sleep. but since your room lights up at 4 am that is really healthy because the first light in the morning relieves depression and increases responsiveness and positivity.According to oriental thought the day begins at dawn. time of the gods. Most positive energy.
  8. As long as you are GOING to sleep in a dark room, I wouldn't worry. The important sleep hormone melatonin is stimulated by quiet and dark at the beginning of the sleep period. By morning, though...even if it is 4:30 AM, you have received the benefits from this hormone that you need for good health.
  9. Light promotes wakefulness and darkness promotes sleep. That's how our bodies were programmed to function. Too much light will affect your sleep and therefore your health. Get darker, heavier curtains.
  10. Not in the slightest. Its just that when you go into a darkened room your body produces melatonin or something which is conducive to sleep, and likewise if you are exposed to daylight it produces seratonin and makes you more alert.
  11. I am in the medical field, we'll just say that. But anyways, I am on call 24-7, and with my particular job I pretty much get sleep whenever I can. I would say most of my sleep I get during the afternoon while it is still light out. I have not noticed any difference in the rest I get at night in the dark verses during the day in the light. I think the most influential factor is sleep pattern and schedule.
  12. If it is a problem for you - buy thicker curtains.
