Kitchen cabinet / backsplash design question - your opinion please?

Take a look at the following picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/77094332@N00/2052510579/ Notice on the left side on the bar, the cabinets stop on top but the backsplash keeps running the length of the counter. I don't believe this is how it is supposed to be. What is your opinion? 1) It is correct as is, backsplash should run entire length of granite 2) It needs to be changed, there should be another cabinet on the end 3) It needs to be changed, the backsplash should stop when the cabinets stop.. Let me know, thanks. This is not something I designed. It is a new house that was under construction when I bought it... one of these cookie cutter houses. This is a new floor plan though and I think they are working out the kinks.

  1. I think the backsplash should run the entire length of the granite, but I also think there should be another cabinet at the end.
  2. In my opinion as a 'girl"(builder), as far as your cabinets go to me it's not 'balanced" I would move the 'end cabinet' down to the end of your granite counter top. it looks like someone erred on length of needed 'fill space' and usable storage. secondly I would totally remove the back splash !!!!!!it looks odd (not only due to length of counter and spacing of cabinets!!) you really have no reason for it . your sink is no where near the wall and your stove has a panel on it (i would assume the micro is hood vent also!!!!) soo!!!! I would paint it (wall between the cabinets and counter tops) to match the remainder of your color scheme.... just an idea !!!! good luck just a ?. did your builder design this or did you, and why "this" , is him/her done? it's just not (again only my opinion) a "complete usable, warming kitchen" space consider other options. looks like you could add so much more usable options, for family as well as entertaining............ don't hate me ...... there a all lot of opinions "out here"
  3. No that doesn't look right. and because it is such a nice kitchen, I would say it is not good enough. If this is a new build, get the builder to fix it for you. My suggestion would be to get them to put a corner shelf in there with two or three shelves and continue the molding style of the other cabinets. or you could just add another cabinet. It looks like you have spent some money on this so I wouldn't sacrifice perfection. My back splash stops at the cabinet (#3) but my peninsula is raised from the counter so it looks right. You could also probably have the back splash stop at cabinets, but I think it would be easier to add a cabinet than rip out tiles, especially because they are on a diagonal.
  4. It is correct, the backsplash is meant to work with the counter, not the cabinets.
