- you will need forty 1 3/4" philips screws, a screwdriver (or alternatively a powerdril with a screwdriver bit) and a bit of elbow grease (and some children). here's what you do: 1) put your hands on the light fixture, and using leverage and force, overcome both earths gravity and the (relatively) minimal friction of air resistence to hoist the fixture into the air. try to aim the fixture's assent into the air so that it eventually comes to rest against the wall, above the medicine cabinet in the corner. 2) use your children (whom you have already sired, otherwise, sire some children before step one) to hold the fixture in place through the use of leverage and and energy. 3) while your issue affix the fixture into its final resting place, use the screws, in about forty different places on the perimiter of the fixture, to screw the fixture right to the wall. 4) make sure that the fixture is screwed to the wall before leaving the room or using the light. 5) call in your proud wife and children, who will marvel at the technical skill of their very manly father, who has provided light to the most important room in the house, a room where each member of the family spends much time in solemn reflection.
- Is there a light fixture in place now? If not you will need an electrician to install a new box for you. If there is already a light that you simply want to replace you can do this yourself. First off find the fuse box or circuit breaker box and turn off the breaker for the light in question. (Double Check this, It's important.) Remove the fuse or switch off the breaker and put a piece of tape over it just so it doesn't get turned back on while you're working on it. Now you will notice that the room where you are working if you have selected the correct fuse or breaker is dark... You will need a light so you can work. If you have a helper to hold a flashlight for you it will help. Light fixtures vary from type to type typically there will be two nuts or screws that hold it to the wall or ceiling. Remove these two nuts or screws and see if the light fixture becomes loose, note that some lights have been painted over and you may need to score around the light to break it free. Pull the light GENTLY from the wall, you don't want to break the feed wires off and in some older homes the insulation on these wires can be very very brittle. So be careful (You've been warned!) You should see three wires a black a white and a copper wire attaching your old light to the house wiring. Typically these will be connected with little caps called wire nuts. And they may have black electric tape on top of them. Unscrew the wire nuts and remove the old light, again be gentle with the house wiring, if you break off the wires you will need an electrician to come in and replace the circuit (Again you were warned). The installation is pretty much the reverse of the removal and instructions should come with your new light. There are many web sites out there to help with this sort of thing. http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/ha_installation/article/0,2037,DIY_13868_2275829,00.html You can also check your local library for books. Most important to remember electricity can kill you and cause a house fire, if you don't know or are unsure about some thing stop and ask a professional or get a professional electrician to do it for you.
