What is a Design House?

For my product design class I have to research design houses that market perfume. But... I don't actually know what a design house is... I know it has something to do with clothes, but that's it. Can anyone help? (please?)

  1. The big design houses are the self-appointed gods of the fashion world. Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Nina Ricci, and Atelier Versace are all examples of the major design houses. These places are equivalent to the historical and offical haute couture houses. I'm linking the haute couture wiki FYI.

  3. A design house is a company that produces high end high quality fashions accessories, and beauty products. A fashion house is headed up by the lead creative designer who acts as the artistic visionary for the line. There are other fashion designers, pattern makers, people who make the dresses and sew the clothes etc. Then there are other items to complement the clothing line: jewelery designers, accessory designers, and almost all have their signature perfumes, and all these other products are meant to fill the creative directions set by the lead creative designer. A design house will also have business, marketing and advertising people working there to try and market the creative vision to the buying public. . A design house is a fancy name for a fashion manufacturing business. It's usually used for Haute Couture designers, most are based in Paris, France. These companies have been around for many years and have gone through several design heads. Dior is now headed by the very competent John Galliano, Chanel is headed by the master craftman Karl Lagerfeld. And that's the basic intro to fashion houses.
  4. You're actually talking about fashion house... Gucci, Prada, YSL, Chanel... Your class is probably going to deal with the image of the brand, and how it translates in their bottle design... Fashion houses come up with perfume, sunglasses, because it's really lucrative. Meant to be afforded by people who can't buy the clothes. You purely sell an image... even if the fashion house is not itself in charge of creating the perfume and the packaging... Let me know if you need more info., it's my company's specialty ;)
