how to install a pair of outdoor lighting in driveway on the right/left side walls of garage door?/?

I know you can just tap the power from outlet inside garage but how to run it cleanly, i perfer not to run any electrical conduit outside of walls. All inside the walls, but above the gargage door you cant see the romex wires why not???Lastly i want the lighting to both go on at the same time using both motion and turning it on when i need it. thanks

  1. drill holes and move the wires through
  2. Run the cable and use the clips to hold it neatly in place. Buy fixtures with motion detectors and/or dawn-to-dusk function and string them on the same wire to a switch.
  3. question is the garage all drywalled to include the ceiling. If so you'll have to preform some "minor" drywall surgury some where. either above the rafters (probably easier) or through the walls. above the garage door is a big Header probably like 4X12 sp you either have to go above it on it or around it. for dual light activation set up the first light closest to the switch then just extend the wires to the second from the first light. Most city electrical codes require romex to either be covered as in a wall or at least 8 feet above the ground if exposed in a garage. Please use grounding and make sure as to what circuit you are going to tie into. lights usually should go with lights or you may find if your going to undertake this your self it may be just as easy to add a dedicated circuit where you could add a few exterior outlets for Christmas lights. Many times your electrical panel can be found in the garage. If so id go for that. black wire to breaker, green to ground buss bar white/Neutral to ground buss bar or neutral buss bar quite often the same. Don't use an extension cord.
  4. Finding the right spot is first. Someplace that it still has some cover from rain/snow or may be replacing flood lights more frequent. Place so you can adjust to aim in same general direction for both to come on from same motion or just place one larger set in upper middle of door. Drill hole through garage wall for wires to be on the inside.
  5. Usually above the garage doors is a solid header of wood. Not a hollow space. Run up the wall from a receptacle outlet to a switch. Continue up to above the ceiling. Run across the rafters and down to the fixtures. Use a switch leg to over ride the motion detector. Don't run the romex outside, that is a violation of the electric code. Even in conduit outside, romex is not allowed.
  6. I know this is a DIY forum, but with all the poor advice that has been given to you at this point, and the fact that you are trying to run line voltage through a structure wall, I would recommend you call an electrician in and have this done properly, safely and to code. There is a reason that professional trades exist.
