What can I do to get my neighbors to TONE DOWN their excessive outdoor lighting?
One neighbor has 5 outdoor street lights (to light the cow field--DUH) and the other has 2 to light a small house. I can hardly see the stars and the glare is outrageous--not to mention the electricity wasted.

- go talk to your neighbours.
- well ask nicely if all else fails- firt! that works for me!!!!!
- just get 6 security lights with some really bright bulbs and aim the motion detectors at their bedroom windows. It may take a few days, but they'll definately see things from your point of view. If that doesn't work get a b.b. gun and shoot em out. Just make sure you don't do it from your property. lol
- talk to them and see if you cant work something out with them.
- Okay. Go to Wal*Mart. Go to the sports and such section. Buy a bb gun. Buy bb's. Go home. Wait till night-time. Load bb's in gun. Shoot bb's at the lights. Run away. Claim complete innocence if confronted. Or you could always just ask them to tone it down a little. Call them on the phone if you don't like confrontation. ;)
- Perhaps, they have the lights on their houses to discourage burglars.
- make a deal with them not to turn them on once a week!
- There are many factors that come into play that you didn't address in your question. Some things to consider though are: 1) Is your neighbor reasonable? Have you tried talking to him? 2) What are his concerns? Why does he have all this lighting? 3) Would you be willing to pitch in some money for a more star-friendly solution such as infrared lighting with an IR security camera? (Few hundred bucks there.) 4) Does your area have light pollution laws. (If you've never heard of them, they do exist in a growing number of areas.) 5) Has your neighbor considered shielded lights lower to the ground? They are required in many areas around airports and available from most good lighting supply houses. Whatever you do, try hard to make your neighbor your ally. After all, you'll be living next to him for some time to come, I imagine. Be creative and try to find a solution that you both benefit from. Make a sketch of the layout of your neighbor's property and lighting and take it to a good lighting supplier and ask them for advice. In any case, should probably shy away from trying to force your neighbor into anything unless there is really no other way and you don't care about your relationship to him. Best of luck!
- tell them to use more natural like lights which dosen't interfere with your view of the sky.
- its not very polite but my neighbor use to call us. I dont know do any of your other neighbors have a problem with it as well?
