interior design?
-how would i prepare for this job? -What steps would i take to move up in this career? -does it require more of an artistic or mechanical skill?

- Interior Design...hm well you would have to be a very creative and imaginative person. You'd have to be good in selecting materials and colors for projects. It's really more artistic than mechanical skill (since most would be done by computer or hand drawing.) If you want to prepare for interior design, get involved in similar fields of it like fashion design, graphic design and/or architecture. You can also take art classes to boost your artistic skills. To move up, you'd have to try to get into an interior design school that are pretty much available everywhere. Like I said, it's mostly artistic, so try to improve on your drawing and creative skills. Since it's similar to architecture, I know for sure you'll enjoy, hell I enjoy doing interiors (I'm a senior draftsman for an architect).
