Interior Design?

I need to find some "rules" of interior design... expecially laws/rules that deal with colors. - A website that teaches the rules would be great.... For instance I want to know if there is a rule about the colors you choose for your kitchen wall and cupboards.... etc.... Much thanks in advance!

  1. You want to learn "design principles" and "colour principles" you should get loads of information from any search engine with these topics. This is part of what every designer and decorator learns in school. I just wanted to add the there aren't rules to follow, but information on how to get optimal results for the look you would like to acheive.
  2. what i've learned over the years is that there are no rules choose colors that appeal to YOU! interior design should reflect the individual, not conform to some set of standards!
  3. Definitely search the internet for color theory and basic principles of composition. It's not even that these principles help you choose the 'right' answer. They help you understand how to create a desired end result and they will help you to understand why certain colors and arrangements are or are not working for you. There must be some fundamental books on interior design on amazon.com.
  4. If you'd really like to get technical... For an introduction to the art and science of color go to your local library and check out: Color by: Paul Zelanski If it's not available locally ask your librarian to obtain it via inter-library loan. The American Society of Interior Designers may also offer a list of links as well. Good Luck
  5. Information about the color wheel will really help you to understand color rules for interior design. Understanding the color wheel will really help you to know what color combinations work well together. For example, if your chosen color was blue, you could use it with its opposite - orange - for a dramatic effect. Or, use it with blue-violet or blue-green, for a more harmonious, soothing effect. You can even stick to lighter and darker shades of the same blue for a more simple effect. You should try and stick to cool colors (bluey colors) and pale colors for decorating small spaces. Try warm colors (reds and oranges) or bold colors, for larger rooms. Colors can also look different in a room, depending on which way the windows face, and the type of artificial lighting that you have in the room. Above all, definitely go with the color you love and that feels right to you. Color is a very personal thing. But, there are more general and universal emotional responses to color as well, that will determine the mood in your room. Sticking with blue - it is a very calming and relaxing color, so use it in any room you want to relax in. Good luck with your decorating plans.
