What is the best home security alarm system available for do-it-yourselvers? I need to arm my house while away

1. My brother (currently living in the "redneck riviera" down south) tells me the best is a couple of shotguns with string tied to the trigger and the doorknob... kinda eliminates the idea a friend could come in and water the plants while you're gone... There are probably security companies in your area that for about $25 a month, they install, service, warranty and monitor a security system... we have about 15 up here in Canada. A good investment and you can cancel any time... with a few small hitches.
2. i believe there's a new one called lazer, or something like that... plug it in to an outlet, & phone line & you're good to go... you may want to conceal it a bit!!!
