Are smoke alarms required to be installed by a landlord on their rental properties?
If you are renting out housing to people are your properties required to have smoke alarms installed? This would be rental property in Kentucky. I am thetenant and not the landlord.My town house has no smoke alarms installed what so ever and doesnt look like there have ever been any here. He also refuses to fix my furnace which is what I am suppose to heat my home with. It is now about 50 degrees in my house because of no heat.

- You're required to have working ones installed. Edit: There should be a working smoke alarm in the living room, kitchen, any hallway, and each of the bedrooms. Call or threaten to call the Fire Marshall he he won't comply. The furnace needs to be fixed by him, as it is a fixture of the property and therefore his to maintain. The Fire Marshall might also wish to look at that.

- Absolutely, As of 1/1/98 it's law in Massachusetts. Anywhere else in the US of A it became law on 1/1/2002. Lets keep all people alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- In Ontario there has to be one on every level of the building It's more for your properties protection than theirs, and a deduction, and they are so cheap

- I would say yes, but it really does depend on local fire codes and ordinances. Check with your fire department.
- you need AT LEAST 1 in every apartment, and if they're not apartments then you need at least 1 on every floor. Not to mention working fire extinguishers ON EVERY FLOOR... NO MATTER WHAT.
- Sadly, it depends on the local laws of your town, sometimes even the state itself. Many localities do have it as a law, as do some states, however, many don't put the onus on the landlord (you'd think that would be the case). However, it is, since, I believe 1987 a federal law to have at least one smoke detector on every floor of your home. Besides, the Fire Marshal should have inspected any and all apartments in your neighborhood and forced the issue with the landlord by now. Even though you may be a renter, you might want to go out and buy one right away and look into the law later. If it turns out that your landlord is legally responsible, you can bring him the reciept (make a copy for yourself) and ask him to reimburse you for it. That, or you could ask him/her for one?
- They are cheap, go buy one, stick it on the wall and deduct it from the rent. Tell your landlord what you did, and leave it there when you vacate.

- In PA yes the landlord is responsible to have smoke alarms in place. It is the tenants responsibility to keep fresh batteries in them. My rental was just inspected and there has to be a smoke alarm in every bedroom, and hallway, foot of stairwells. I'm sure law would be about the same in all states.
- Yes, and they also have to be working, which means they have to either hook them up to the power supply and/or put in the batteries. (the ones hooked up to power still need a back-up battery) How many you need depends on your state. I am very paranoid and put them in each bedroom, the kitchen and the garage.
