I have just installed vinyl tile flooring. There is glue and also dirt all over it. How do I clean it?
How do I make the commercial vinyl tiles look shinny and clean.

- Use WD-40 to remove the glue. Spray it on the rag, not floor, and then rub the glue/dirt spots off. This will also leave a greasy feeling. Clean this with floors' recommended cleaner.
- You can use a product called "goo gone" Its awesome.
- Clean-up the glue with Mineral spirits, read the glue label, it will tell you that even "water" based adhesives require Mineral Spirits for clean-up after the glue has dried. Strip the floor with a commercial stripper. Apply several coats of commercial floor wax, and burnish with a high speed buffer. The chemicals you need are available at Home Depot, Lowe's, or a janitorial supplier. The buffer, well, you will have to rent it, but that's how the "Big Kids" do it. Good Luck!
- I'm pretty sure that the glue you have used is a water base glue not a solvent glue. You can wipe it clean with a rag moist with warm water and a small amount of cleaning detergent mixed into the water. But if it is a solvent glue, then you have to use a rag moist with small quantity of a solvent solution, that would dissolve the glue and then wipe it clean with a dry rag. As for the dirt it could be clean off with warm water and detergent, then wipe it clean with a dry rag, to dry the moisture and detergent. Note you have to use protective gears if using solvents to protect you from inhaling fumes evaporating from the solvent, and avoid skin contact.
- Mineral spirits or goo gone. Sometimes just Murphy's Oil Soap and HOT water will dissolve it.
- We just installed some too and had that same problem. We used orange oil and it worked well, You do have to get up the residue or it is a mite slippery. You could also use nail polish remover as it is a solvent. The orange oil smells a lot better though and is not so toxic!!! Good luck!
- Although I'm apparently 2 weeks late with an answer I would recommend going to Home Depot's Tile Dept. and buy Jasco's Adhesive remover. It is in a container that looks like BBQ lighter fluid. I prefer this over mineral spirits becasue it has a slight jell-like consistency and it drys to a white haze that can be swept up. Go over the seams using the adhesiver remover to clean them up. While at home depot go to the Janitorial area and they carry a floor stripping/waxing system by ZEP. There are 4-5 steps but all you need is the stripper(step #1) which also helps remove the adhesive and Step #4 the wax. Use a Blue looped mop head(Contains all nylon) to apply the wax. Start along the base of the wall dragging the mop close to but not touching the baseboard. This is known as "cutting-in" the base. In the larger area of the floor simply mop step#4 on the floor in the usual fashion and Voila! All the adhesive is gone and the floor looks as good as most grocery stores.
