Installing Tile Flooring Over Vinyl?

We have 1 layer of vinyl flooring in great shape but may want to install tile. Can we put the tile board over the vinyl flooring and then install a new tile floor. Thanks for any information.

  1. smart lady, you sure can
  2. You can definitely install tile over the vinyl. You may not need the any hardi-back, just some wet bed (as long as your floor is pretty level).
  3. yes you can but i recommend you use the backer board
  4. That is the way I would do it. One thing that I was told before I stated doing ceramic floors was that if you don't plan on using some sort of hardi backer then you have to have at least 1 1/4" (one and one quarter inch) of wood for a solid base. If you don't have that hardi board or the wood thickness your tile will eventually tend to crack along a plywood seam. If your on a concrete slab then don't worry about the thick wood or hardi backer. Just make sure that your mortar will adhere to the vinyl. Good luck and have fun.
  5. You can. Make sure you attach the backer board securly. The prefered way is to set the backer board in "thin set" over the sub floor, and then screw it.
