Question about vinyl flooring?

We're soon going to have new vinyl flooring installed. I'd like to know what works best for keeping it clean. I've used mop and bucket, and I've also used Swiffer wet cloths. My problem with both is that the water/cloth gets dirty so fast, and I feel like I'm just spreading the mess over the whole floor. Does anyone have any better ideas? I'm talking day-to-day cleaning, because I know that every now and then it will need to be scrubbed with me on my hands and knees. :) I should also mention that the main things that end up on our floor come from our two bunny cages. I probably don't need to elaborate. Heh. Thanks! :) I usually sweep around the bunny cages, wipe up urine (sorry, but that's part of what has to be cleaned up), and use sanitizing wipes around the cages. I guess my question is more about the high traffic areas, like ahead of the sink, and from the outside door to the dining room entrance.

  1. buy a hoover steam cleaner...it works equally well on hard surfaces as carpet.
  2. the best is the good old mop with soapy water then rinse with clear !!! maybe lay down the law with your family about dragging so much dirt in ????
  3. get pans for under the cages, they sell big flat ones at auto parts stores to catch oil drips under cars, like 3'X4' size. that will take care of half the mess. have everyone in the family take their shoes off and put slippers on when they come in the door, then the dirt will stop there. put down a boot tray for the shoes and a rack over it to put the slippers in. and get some big thick doormats to scrub the dirt off the shoes before they enter. this ought to cut the cleaning down for ya, then you'll just have to police them when they come in. good luck.
  4. Actually, the swifter DRY clothes work terrific! For your daily cleaning, you don't want to have to wet mop every day!!?? So use a DRY swifter cloth every day, to pick up the loose dirt, dust, hair, etc. Then you can do the wet mop once a week or so, but the floor should not get overly gross if you pick up all the loose dirt and stuff frequently. As fas as what you should use to wet mop, gosh, vinyl is SOO basic and easy to clean you can use whatever method you want. Use a machine or a mop and bucket or whatever. Its not a hard to clean surface.
  5. What I do is broom and dust pan the mess and then use a Swiffer dry, and then I mop with either Pine- Sol or Bleach, depending on the grime.
