Can prefinished hardwood flooring be installed over self-stick vinyl floor tiles (for a 3rd floor bedroom)?
Third floor remodel; currently exists a subfloor. Due to cost we're thinking about installing self-stick vinyl floor tiles first, and maybe in about two years install prefinished hardwood floors. We're wondering if we could save the step of pulling up the vinyl floor tiles when we're ready to install the prefinished hardwood flooring.

- its a not attached to anything, so i don't see why not...
- as long as the tiles arent thick enough. Why dont you just spend the extra and go for the wood now.
- Yeah it's possible. Would there be a problem with floor thickness though, especially at doors? or at transition of floor types now or later? If the vinyl flooring starts to come up on its own in the future, will that affect the wood flooring installed on top of it? Lots of things are possible, but you have to ask if it is the best thing to do. I, personally, would always want to only have one floor layer installed on any floor in my house.
- We've made the mistake before of doing something temporary with a plan for something better later on. In the end you're wasting time and money. Wait until you can do it right. You'll be glad you did.
- Hey, do what you can now. You'll have a nice clean floor for the years that you wait to afford the hardwood. Two years is a long wait and I guess some people are loaded... I'm sure you'd love to just do the hardwood now. You'll be able to install over it but if you have someone else doing it they'll prob. tell you you need to get up the vinyl first. It could be a prob w/ the meeting of the exsisting floor at the hallway as far as hieght matching up. Just go measure it. Good Luck.
- the self sticking tiles are crap anyway if you lay over the top it will probably make noise under the new wood. After a couple of years those things don't stick anymore anyway just peel the up and install the wood.
- Go with the hardwood now, or find a cheap piece of vinyl sheet goods and loose lay it in the room. The self stick will peel up, but will leave a nasty sticky mess behind and even the residue can cause crackling noises in the summer months when the humidity levels are high. But the cheapest alternative is to go for broke and spend the dough now and get what you really want and in a couple of years when you can really afford it...it's already paid for. Go on a little vacation and pat yourselves on the back for not having spent the extra $75- $250 it will take to use an alternative in the meantime.
- put it down over the top of what you have down already. it will work out great and will be alot easier
- i agree with most of the others.... the cost difference between "peel and stick" and laminate flooring is so small that why waste the money now and cover it up later on.
- It may cost you more in the long run though. I would be careful of shortcuts, to prevent future delays.
- no you don't need two remove them. before you start make sure they are all in good shape and if any are coming up glue them down and you should be good to go.
- Yes it can
