Does anyone know anything about the advantages of using cork or bamboo flooring?

  1. The advantage is that they come from a renewable, natural source. However; i've heard that they don't wear that well, and don't let anyone in high heels on them. The heels leave dents.
  2. Bamboo flooring is very environmentally friendly because bamboo grows very quickly. The bamboo grass is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet, only taking 5 years to grow to maturity, and can provide 25 times the bio mass of a comparable stand of trees. It's also strong and has a tensile strength exceeding mild steel. It can withstand up to 50,000 psi of pressure. Cork floors are made from the bark of the cork tree, which regrows in about 9 years. It can also be made from the waste material left over from making corks for wine stoppers. I installed an IKEA bamboo floor in my living room several months ago (I think it's called 'Kvist'). It's held up really well so far. I've got 2 dogs running around on it all the time, and it doesn't have any obvious scratches unless you look really closely. A couple of heavy objects have fallen on it, and my wife has walked across it in heels - no dents.
  3. Cork flooring is touted as being a tough, durable, & beautiful material, providing acoustic and thermal insulation. It is highly resistant to fire. Cork comes from a renewable resource: Cork bark can be harvested once per decade without harm. Cork flooring is naturally hypoallergenic and mold-resistant, and can last for decades. The material is biodegradable at the end of its functional life. High formaldehyde levels generally negate bamboo’s environmental advantages.
  4. In France they recycle the corks from wine bottles! .
  5. Both cork and bamboo are more renewable than stone and wood however, in the case of bamboo the shipping of the product causes a ton of pollution...so what is right? I don't know...i personally have bamboo and it scratches really easily although it looks cool. At least you are trying to make an effort.
  6. bamboo is good
  7. Greenandsave.com is the first site to offer ROI rankings for home improvement projects that not only save you money but also help save the environment http://www.greenandsave.com They have a great section on both cork and bamboo flooring.
  8. both are good to use because they are natural..but i like bamboo floorings more, it is more aesthetically pleasing and it somewhat gives comfortable and warm feelings to the person.
  9. the advantage to using bamboo is that you are preserving forests buy not causes them to cut down any trees for wood flooring. another advantage is that sweeping your bamboo floor will save a lot of energy compared to vacuuming a carpet.
