  1. When we had our oak floor put in they put in under-lay and ply board under it so that the surface was level.
  2. you should take up the existing boards and put new boards on a damp prof under lay
  3. cover the old floor with thin ply wood sheets The bigger the sheets the better nail these down every 6 inches along each edge and then down the centre line of each side. walk over the sheet and if it makes a tapping sound nail that area down as well. do this all over the floor. Leave small gaps between each sheet (say 2-3mm) this will allow for any expansion, other wise it could bow. Nail these sheets with lost head nails which are NOT long enough to go all the way through the old boards and tape the joints with some type of paper tape (it could be masking tape). If you are gluing the new hard wood down have a hoover so you dint give yourself problems with dust etc with the glue. Keep the hammer and nail to hand as when you are laying the new floor you may find the sheets require extra pinning down. The more you pin this down the better, when i did mine i mailed the sheets down every 6 inches in every direction (1000,s of nails) but its never moved in 10 years.
