Can Radiant Flooring be put on a floor with a basement below it?

I see radiant flooring used with slab foundations, but what if I have a full foundation, I know the radiant flooring is set and covered with cement. My concern is the cement being too much weight for the main floor. I don't want to fill my basement with too many floor supports.

  1. Radiant flooring can be used without the cement. They make plywood strips with grooves in them for the tubing, and reflective material to direct the heat upwards. This can be nailed down over the sub-floor and hardwood put on top of that. There is also electric radiant flooring that I've seen used under tile in a bathroom. This is just for comfort, though, as it would be really expensive to run to heat a house. There are many options, so check around with the people who sell it.
  2. You bet ya can, Had it in several houses in South Dakota, And liked it.
  3. Radiant heat tubing can be installed UNDER the sub-floor from the basement. (Provided, of course, that ceilings haven't been installed in the basement) It doesn't heat quite as well as it does when installed in the lightweight concrete but it will work. You'd do well to research the subject on the internet and your local library. Good luck.
