Can I use my home security system without a contract?

I have a new house that has a home security system installed, with motion detectors, an alarm, a keypad, etc. How can I activate it and use it without having to pay a security service to moniter it? This is a new house, they haven't given me a code for the keypad, and pushing buttons doesn't seem to do anything. The keypad does tell me if any doors or windows are open or if the motion sensor detects anything...I just want to be able to set it to go off if there is an intruder.

  1. Good Question
  2. lts best to use a contract. to get the proper security you need
  3. Just turn it on. The alarm should sound if there's a break in, but you're not hooked up to the monitoring company.
  4. it should still work as a device even if not being monitored. I think it will still go off if their is a breakin, however you will not have any warning of trouble if you are out of town.
  5. No, it has likely been deactivated by the alarm company by the previous owners (otherwise they would have to continue paying the bill). If it still does beep you could use it but there would be no company to respond to the alarm should it go off.
  6. If it is still hooked up properly it should work but if the alarm goes off no one will respond unless someone reports it to the police or fire department. Set the alarm and put in your code and then try opening your door without deactivating the system the alarm should ring in a few seconds. If it does you have to deactivate it by putting in your code again. Note in some areas if the alarm is reponded to by police etc and is a false alarm they may charge a service fee.
