Is it possible to purchase a home security system and not pay a monthly fee, and where can I purchase one?

I just bought a new house that is pre-wired for a home security system. I would like to have one installed but don't want to pay a monthly fee. Basically I just want a system that will start an alarm if someone were to break in. I don't need a company to monitor it. I also don't want a wireless system. I have looked all over the internet and all the systems have a monthly monitoring fee. And if they don't have a monthly fee they are wireless.

  1. You can buy the equipment and install it yourself . . Just check the yellow pages for a supplier . . . Most alarm companies will do the installation at no charge for the equipment and amortize its cost over the length of the contract plus the monitoring service fee and their profit . . . They will also do any servicing that might be necessary and change batteries on the wireless devices at no charge for the service calls or the new batteries . . . I prefer it that way because my wife would go nutzo if I were away and there was a problem with the alarm system . . . With the service, she makes one phone call and it's repaired or reset properly in a very short time . . . .
  2. Yes. Since you won't be buying monitoring, you will have to define what monitoring you want and contrive to do it yourself. Vendors such as Radio Shack can supply the magnetic switches which are usually used for such things, and the wiring is simple enough that you can do it yourself.
