Are there home security systems requiring no phone lines, like through Internet?

  1. Well, I recently saw a Comcast commercial that said there VoIP service would work with most home security systems. So that uses the internet, but you need a VoIP carrier service. Most home security systems use the phone line because it is the most reliable utility in your home, on average anyhow. Most phone systems boast a reliability percentage of over 99%!!! That's pretty amaqzing, and I'm not one to give utilities pats on the back. Even if you hook up a home security system to VoIP, you will then need some system in place to make sure if you losr power, the phone connection is still active. Even if there were some way to hook it up wirelessly, which I have not heard of, you would need to have all the necessary compnonets (routers, modems, etc.) backed up on battery or your security system would shut down when the power went out! Good luck and be safe!
  2. If you have Vonage you can get the security with them, or ADT the security ppl also have VoIP security!! home security companies gotta go with the times, or they will loose customers!! http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2600.html http://www.adt.com/wps/portal/adt/for_your_home/products_services/security_systems/voip/
  3. In short: Yes, many All alarm panels can be monitored through VOIP with a network interface or VOIP specific module. That interface module can be provided and added to almost all alarm panels that already use dial out options. Your local security or monitoring company should have that module available by request. If the alarm company you are using or interested in don't offer those services- shop it, you will save money. There will be someone out there that utilizes and provides monitoring services for that device no matter where you live. You can also use a cellular device that calls out if you don't have internet or home phone. In order for any of the devices to truly work you will need to get a subscription to monitoring company. Monitoring will reduce your home owners insurance if you pursue it. Opinion: VOIP is not dependable and a hard line of communications is always better. You will need to invest in battery back-up on all modems, routers, alarm panels and other related hardware. The upgrade in equipment cost and additional monitoring fees, labor charges can add up fast. It is to me the last or only solution. Here is a link to a large installing and monitoring company that addresses the question and states there liabilities for using it.
  4. OK, here's an industry answer for you. There are a few ways you can go. Cell /GSM back-up has become increasingly popular, there are also generic IP modules available which can interpret the signal coming from the alarm panel and re-transmit it via the Internet. In my opinion, if you are already paying the extra money for back-up monitoring, your best bet would be to go with cellular as the Internet is reliant on power to your modem and also goes down periodically for various reasons. If your question is in relation to VOIP as the others have assumed, cable VOIP does tend to work more reliably with Alarm systems but you should look at backing up the power to the modem as a previous poster has suggested.
