What is the difference between a toolbox and a tool chest. Maybe the tool chest has drawers?

Dictionaries tend to treat toolbox, tool chest, tool cabinet as synonyms.

  1. I would think,,but I'm no dictionary, that a tool box is a box, a tool chest has drawers, and a tool cabinet has doors that open.
  2. If I went shopping for a tool BOX, I'd look for something with a handle and would be easily transportable. A tool CHEST would be something larger, with many drawers and compartments, equipped casters or wheels to make it easily moveable, but not portable like the tool BOX. A tool CABINET, to me, is the same as a tool CHEST.
  3. to me a tool cabinet is something attached to the wall of a garage or shop, it has doors, and it isn't going to move anywhere, a tool chest has wheels and is moved around the shop or it could be attached to the back of your truck and the tool box is a small metal or plastic box with a handle that you haul to work sites.
  4. You're correct--a tool box is portable, can be easily carried (if you're strong enough, of course--tools are heavy!). It may be in one of several different shapes. A tool chest, on the other hand, is bigger, perhaps waist high, perhaps taller. It probably has wheels, so you can push it around. And, yes, it does have a number of different-sized drawers.
  5. A tool box can and will set upon the tool chest. The tool chest will have a flat surface on top and only drawers. While the tool box will have a lift up lid. And a tood cabnit has doors. It is also shaped like the tool chest. But my tool cabnit has a tray on the front for bolts and or tools to rest in. Hope this helps clear this up for you.
