Kitchen cabinets and sockets?

I' m preparing to move into a flat and the kitchen has no wall cabinets. I'm thinking of fitting some myself, but the available wall space has 4 different plug sockets. I've heard that you shouldn't (or can't) drill above sockets. Is there another way I can have cabinets? The kitchen is very small so I need as much storage space as possible.

  1. Why are you drilling? You should be attaching the cabinets to the wall studs, otherwise they aren't going to hold much weight. The screws will go into the studs, so it probably won't hit a wire. Chances are the wires are about 4' above the floor, and you will be installing the screws above that.
  2. If your careful, there's no reason why you can't mount the cabinets or shelves around the outlets.
  3. Electric wires will run in the cavity, you need to fix your cabinets to the timber studs. If you are worried you can get a little device like a pen that will flash or beep when held next to the live wires, so you could use it to mark where the wires are.
  4. You don't say if the walls are solid or cavity. In both instances get a metal detector (only cheap) so you can find the electric cables, pipes or studs if it's a cavity wall. Cables should be in straight lines but there are cowboy builders out there and you don't know where they are so make sure. hope it helps you.`
  5. you cant drill above or below a socket ..but you can either side if you have two wall cupboards ..join them together ..and fix the top corners only
