Depth of Kitchen top cabinets?

I just had kitchen cabinets installed. The inside of the wall cabinets is just 11 inches deep, and the back of the cabinet is 5/8 inches. Two problems for me: one, some of my dishes won't fit. I had 12 inches of space in my old cabinets. two: the range hood will stick out under the cabinets, as range hoods I have seen are 12 inches deep. Is there a standard for wall cabinets? I hate to have them redone and waste all that work and wood. What can I do?

  1. yes the new standards are 12" deep front to back then you have to allow for backs and face frame which take away from your inside measurements as you have notes ther lowers are 24" deep and lose the same amount of space for the very same reason
  2. I thought it was 12" Mine are.. maybe they made them wrong.
  3. Too costly of a mistake. hmmm. I would say try to learn of new and creative ways to make them work. You can purchase plate organizers. They keep things looking organized with very little effort. And some times makes more room, that's always a bonus. On the other hand If you had a contractor install these cabinets and they wrote you an estimate for 12" cabinets then you have to make that phone call. to your lawyer. gl
  4. They probably are "standard" unless you had them built in place, problem is the cheap construction used today vs the old built in place stuff uses up lots of wasted space. The thin wood if you can call it that needs structural supports which eat into the depth of the cabinet. I could not believe my eyes when I opened up my neighbors 15" wide base cabinet drawer and the inner part was not wide enough for a flatware tray! Reface I say Reface, or is that repent, never could get that one right.
  5. 12" from outside to outside (back to front) inside will be smaller because of the back.
