white cabinets wood floors?

I am having a new home built and cannot decide on the kitchen cabinet colors. I can either go with a maple or white cabinets. I like the look of white cabinets with the beige granite with dark veins in it. However, if I do this, should I go with a dark floor? I also don't know if it will make my kitchen look cheap with the white. I need help deciding. There is a lot of cabinets in this kitchen with a HUGE island in the center, so a wrong mistake on the cabinet color I feel will throw everything off.

  1. Personally, I like light colored floors in the kitchen because it reflects the light and opens the space up. As far as the cabinets go, I would go for maple because I like real wood in the kitchen. It is less, clinical looking?
  2. Go with the maple cabinets.White tends to date the home to the early 90's,when everyone wanted white.Maple is far better from a resale point of view.I install cabinets all day long and I see a white kitchen about every three months.
  3. Personally, I like maple cabinets. However, white cabinets are a good choice. You could always make your island one color (more like a piece of furniture) and your kitchen perimeter another color. Just make sure everything ties in together and it will look great.
  4. What is your lifestyle, family composition, and area you live in? Have you compared ALL your color choices in ALL lights? What looks good in the store, on a website, or in a catalog may look horrendous in your kitchen. Natural and artificial light can make colors appear different, and while the beige granite may tone with white cabinets in the store, in your kitchen it might look pretty, um, stupid. I do a LOT of cooking, and after five years of being sick and tired of trying to keep my white kitchen cabinets clean (including those grubby little fingerprints), I tore them out and put in wood. If you like the look of white, go with a blonde/light/natural pine finish. Both pine and maple, in my opinion, are very warm and inviting, and will continue to mellow with age. You state the kitchen is huge, so consider whether or not white cabinets will make it look like an "institution," create additional glare, and wash out other colors. What kind of floor are you considering? Tile, wood? Are there the pitter patter of tiny feet and paws running in from a muddy back yard? A mid-range beige or tan or light brown floor will not show up dirt and spills as much (yes, I know you are an impeccable housekeeper, but you can't be washing your floors 24/7), as will a really dark floor. And, consider my experience with my light colored floors -- when the early-morning eastern sun comes in through the French doors, oh, the glare is blinding, and, the overhead lights create white glare spots on the floor, which totally disrupts the color and overall flow of the floor. Pick a mid-range color from your counter top. Most home centers have computers where you can input your color and design choices (sure beats trying to figure it out with a couple of small samples) which should be a great help to you. You also might want to consult an interior designer -- in the long run the cost could be well worth it. Many home centers have in-house designers or can recommend one. (Uh, can you tell my kitchen had been put together by a clueless male without any sense of function and design?)
